SUMMARY:Writing the Classroom 4
DESCRIPTION:https://writing-the-classroom.vercel.app \nSpecial Session on “Using Audiobooks in the Teaching of Philippine Literature” \nAudiobooks are the wave of the future. While the sales of print books and ebooks have seen a decline in the past few years\, the sales and popularity in the West of audiobooks has been soaring in the past decade\, and the pandemic has driven sales of this literary format to an all-time high. The combination of the cellphone and the digital downloading has made literature come alive for millions of readers/listeners who can now immerse themselves in the literary experience while taking a walk or doing household chores. The pandemic has only emphasized the need for new formats of learning like audiobooks to make students appreciate this mode of conveying literature in an intimate manner. In the Philippines the audiobook format has not been explored well\, especially for educational purposes. For this reason the author and some friends created an online domain to promote Philippine audiobooks to be accessed online by any student in the Philippines (https://literature.ph/). The author will share his pedagogical approach of his first time to use an audiobook in the teaching of Philippine literature as well as the reviews and reactions of his students to the audiobook experience. He will end with insights regarding the prospects for the future and the challenges of this medium for teachers in general.

SUMMARY:R for Social Research 1
DESCRIPTION:Training Workshop: R for Social Research 1 \nSeptember 10-11\, 2020\nPalma Hall 207\nUniversity of the Philippines\nDiliman\, Quezon City \nSign-up: forms.gle/tCsQigp18AD1kKJ36 \nRegistration Fee: P5\,000\n‘Early Bird’ Rate (till June 30): P4\,000\nRegistration fee covers lunch\, snacks\, materials. \nInquiries: contact@upsilab.org / ssprf@kssp.upd.edu.ph / +63 2 8426 3801 \n \nDESCRIPTION\nR is a multi-platform computing package for statistics\, graphing\, and visualisation. Surveys\, data mining\, and other studies could well use such increasingly popular application. Part of a series of Training Workshops on Computational Social Research\, “R for Social Research 1” is designed for social scientists\, researchers with no prior programming experience. This introductory workshop focuses on the use of R for:\n– Data management\n– Data visualisation\n– Analysis of social media data\n– Processing of geographic information\n– Processing data from varied sources \nParticipants are encouraged to install and familiarize with the application prior to the workshop. \nWhy R?\n“Compared with commercial packages like SAS\, SPSS\, and Stata\, R has at least three strengths. It is a well-thought-out\, coherent system that comes with a suite of software facilities for data management\, visualization\, and analysis… R allows users to follow the algorithms\, define and add new functions\, and write new analytic methods\, rather than merely supplying canned routines.” (Quan Li\, Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University) \n

SUMMARY:Stakeholders Workshop on the Development of a Data Privacy Toolkit for Research Involving Human Participants in the Philippines
DESCRIPTION:The Workshop is part of a series of workshops across the country to solicit inputs on the regulatory challenges of the Data Privacy Act to research involving human participants. The information gathered from the Workshops will be used to develop a context-sensitive Privacy Toolkit for Research that offers practical suggestions in dealing with privacy risks\, without compromising the quality of research in the country. \nDriven by inputs from the research community itself\, the Privacy Toolkit for Research is going to be built on the current Privacy Toolkit developed by the National Privacy Commission\, with special attention to the scientific research enterprise. Emphasis is also given to the need of research ethics committees\, researchers\, and research institutions to implement privacy management\, the need to incorporate data privacy measures into research protocols and research reviews\, and the need to continually assess and treat privacy risks in the context of research. \nThis initiative is funded by a grant from the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD)\, through the Social Sciences and Philosophy Research Foundation\, Inc. (SSPRF). The Workshop for the Visayas is going to be co-hosted by Silliman University.
